Assessment
Guiding Questions: Did we do what we set out to do? What kinds of numbers support
that position? What areas of our
mission are not represented by quantative data? How do we demonstrate those outcomes (qualitative
effects)?
The area of assessment is attracting attention from many angles. In education, nonprofit organizations,
arts organizations,
and many other fields people are becoming frustrated by quantative “bottom lines.” Numbers are
one important way of
gauging success or failure, but there are many results of any endeavor that are not represented adequately
by things one can
count. One of the major hurdles faced by arts organizations that educate is how to show the kinds
of skills and learning that
people acquire on a qualitative basis.
